Brief backstory / Description of character
Matt Sydal is respected veteran at just 38 years old with over 20 years experience and one of the key names of wrestlers in the generation of early 2000's independent wrestling scene. Born on March 19 1983, in St. Louis Missouri a hotbed of a state for pro wrestling. Influenced by NJPW's super J cup, ECW and WCW's cruiserweight division Matt's goal was to be a pro wrestler.
Matt dabbled in taekwondo an he bought a trampoline when he was 13 using his Bar Mitzvah money joining the backyard wrestling scene , by 14 he had been recruited on the high school wrestling team despite being the smallest of his peers he won Freshman wrestler of the year and the next summer at 15 built a real ring in his backyard and put on paid shows. He desired to become trained pro and planned to go to Mexico to train with the Luchadors or go to Canada to train with the Hart Dungeon, his parents helped him find a local independent federation Gateway Championship Wrestling to train and he became licensed pro as a wrestler one year under the legal age at 17.
In 2003 by coincidence , right place and right time he made his debut on the indie circuit which was going through a huge boom
there he met Colt Cabana, CM Punk, Bryan Danielson and many other upcoming indie darlings. In 2004 he joined Ring of honor where he became a tag team champion with Christopher Daniels and became renowned for his dynamic in ring style that combines Japanese and Mexican wrestling, as well as a mastery of the shooting star press. He went international in 2004 and by 2006 he was getting as he puts it best his " black belt in pro wrestling" in Dragon Gate in Japan. He returned to the US and was on a short lived wrestling show on MTV called Wrestling Society X .
In 2007 he had a try out for WWE and despite John Lauranitis turning him down saying he was impressive but they weren't signing cruiserweights at the time, Nova/Simon Dean who met him once when he was training at 17 remembered him and got his contract
pushed through for developmental and he went to OVW. There he was one of the very few wrestlers there , most were body builders and models who were the priority over the experienced indy guys but despite being told he would be a spoke on the wheel
for the body builders he became OVW world heavyweight champ in just 3 months. WWE stopped working with OVW and went to working with FCW so he was sent to FCW . While in FCW he was hired by WWE to train Floyd Mayweather for his Wrestlemania match against Big Show.
When an independent wrestler Biohazard called him and asked him if he could him a dark match that pissed off Matt who had not gotten one yet and he called John Lauranitis to see if they needed extras for a show in his hometown, he was going to be there for his brother's graduation. Despite being told by Johnny Ace not to come, he did anyway and got booked in a dark match against Jamie Noble, who he had wrestled before on the indies and the next night he made his WWE debut against Shelton Benjamin on ECW, at the time Shelton was in a feud with Kofi Kingston, Kofi was on commentary during the match and Matt lost by count out when Shelton powerbombed him into Kofi. Kofi and Matt became close friends and tagged the next week as he debuted as
Evan Bourne, a name Joey Styles helped him come up with. The shooting star press was banned for many years but he got it unbanned and went on a winning streak with it calling it the Air Bourne and first hit it on Matt Striker retiring him from in ring competition. Matt Striker went on to do commentary for ECW and was very positive always putting him over as "the most exhilarating young superstar"
At Cyber Sunday in October, WWE fans chose Bourne to face Matt Hardy for the ECW Championship. Matt Hardy was the first person in WWE to evade the Air Bourne. Two days later, during a six-man tag match on ECW, Bourne landed a dive from the ring on his right ankle, dislocating it and tearing his deltoid ligament. Surgery was not necessary, but Bourne was not medically cleared to return to the ring until March 17. On December 8, he won the "Best Finishing Maneuver" Slammy award for his shooting star press but Mike Knox assaulted and stole it from him while he was on his crutches.
On June 29, Bourne was traded to the Raw brand by Donald Trump and made his debut that night as the first of three wrestlers in a Gauntlet match against WWE Champion Randy Orton. On the November 2 episode of Raw, Bourne lost a United States Championship match to The Miz. On the December 29 episode of ECW, he defeated Mike Knox in an "ECW Homecoming" match to qualify for the "Homecoming Battle Royal", which would decide the opponent for ECW Champion Christian at the Royal Rumble.
in a shock main event he challenged WWE Champion Sheamus on the January 4, 2010, episode of Raw for a spot as number one contender but lost in a valiant effort, Sheamus being the only person to ever kick out of the Air Bourne-
The following week on ECW, he competed in the "Homecoming Battle Royal" but was the first man eliminated. On the March 8 episode of Raw, he defeated William Regal to qualify for the Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania XXVI, which was won by Jack Swagger.
The May 31, 2010 episode of Raw opened with Bourne being assaulted by Edge, after Bourne proposed Edge put his spot in the WWE Championship match at Fatal 4-Way on the line in a match.
Later in the show in his second time in the main event , John Cena who had praised Bourne on The Gorilla Position podcast, chose Bourne to replace his scheduled tag team partner, Randy Orton (who was earlier injured by Edge), in a match against Edge and Sheamus, calling him a Human Wrecking Ball. Bourne pinned Sheamus to earn the victory for his team, Two weeks later, Bourne defeated Chris Jericho by disqualification. Jericho had threatened the referee and attacked Bourne while he was in the ropes. At Fatal 4-Way, he pinned Jericho in a rematch with a super/avalanche gordbuster and Air Bourne to the back.
The following night on Raw, Jericho challenged Bourne to a third match, stating he would leave WWE if he lost; Jericho pinned Bourne to win the match and stay with the company.[44] On the July 5 Raw, Bourne teamed with Randy Orton to defeat Jericho and Edge. Randy Orton RKO'd Bourne after the match while they were celebrating.
The next week Bourne attacked Orton with his trademark rolling Savate Kick and went for the Air Bourne, Randy hit him in mid-air with the RKO.
Later that night while icing his neck Sheamus harassed but Nexus attacked him
Bourne competed in the Money in the Bank ladder match at Money in the Bank on July 18, but lost, but managed to hit an Air Bourne on Randy Orton
On September 19, at Night of Champions, Bourne teamed with Mark Henry in the Tag Team Turmoil match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. They were the final team eliminated, by Drew McIntyre and Cody Rhodes. On the October 11 Raw, he lost a match (to decide who would be on Team Raw at Bragging Rights) to CM Punk, and was subsequently assaulted with Punk clarifying it was nothing personal but tore his rotator cuff injuring his shoulder.
Bourne returned on the February 28, 2011 episode of Raw, defeating Sheamus after Sheamus was attacked by Triple H before the match. On the August 22, 2011, episode of Raw, Bourne won his first championship in WWE. He and Kofi Kingston defeated David Otunga and Michael McGillicutty for the WWE Tag Team Championship. On the August 29 Raw, the team was named Air Boom and made their first title defense, defeating Otunga and McGillicutty in a rematch. At Night of Champions, Air Boom retained the title against The Miz and R-Truth when The Miz was disqualified for attacking the referee. At both Hell in a Cell and Vengeance, Air Boom retained the title against Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger.
On November 1, WWE announced it had suspended him for 30 days for his first violation of the company's wellness policy for use of synthetic marijuana. Bourne returned to television on December 5. On December 18, at Tables, Ladders & Chairs, Air Boom retained the Tag Team Championship by defeating Primo & Epico.] On January 15, 2012, Air Boom lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to Primo and Epico at a house show. The weekend of his WWE release he went to Peru to the Peruvian Jungle for an ayahuasca retreat, dealing with self confidence his whole life and career especially. The ayahuasca was not working so he instead stayed and was given
Wachuma, which is from San Pedro Cactus and this made him spiritual reborn. The point of psychedelic medicine like Wachuma is it makes you realize your true goals in life, MMA fighters had taken it and never fought again. Despite this risk, it had an opposite effect and his passion for pro wrestling came back ten fold.
Matt Sydal has the spent the past 9 years with a resurgence to his career. He now incorporates his spiritual beliefs influenced from Buddhism, Ram Dass, Alan Watts and Timothy Leary with his veteran wrestling experience as the Visionary, promoting an anti-establishment modern hippie movement. Peace, love and pro wrestling as an art form. He has held tag team gold with Ricochet and was X Division and Grand Champion in TNA/IMPACT . He also won the Israeli Pro Wrestling Association's world championship on
April 21, 2019 and still is champion .
