As we near the end of the year, this has been a pretty decent year for professional wrestling. Who has been your favorite wrestler to watch over the last calendar year and why?

I really don't watch a ton of wrestling. I've watched virtually zero WWE this year aside from the occasional clip on YouTube. My mainstream answer would probably be Adam Page. I've liked him enough that I impulse purchased his action figure a few months ago.
I started watching ChocoPro back in January and my wife actually enjoys it, the only wrestling she's ever really latched onto, so we've watched a lot of that this year. Definitely more than any other wrestling. From there, I've really enjoyed Minoru Fujita, Antonio Honda, Mei Suruga, and Choun Shiryu.

Doesn't count as a wrestler, but Paul Heyman's work has been glorious. I don't watch a single bit of WWE TV since it's mostly dreck for me, but I will track down YouTube clips or streamable videos of his segments. He actually made me 1) Care somewhat about Roman in general, 2) Care about Roman vs Brock happening yet -again-. Don't care about their matches, just love Paul being stuck in the middle and his acting. Dude deserves an Emmy/Oscar.
For actual wrestler... well Jamie Hayter bias aside... Hookberg has been entertaining the past few weeks. After that... probably would say Darby. Sting aside, I just love a good underdog willing to throw his body to the chaos. I can actually get caught up when he does stuff.
Honorable mention: Sammy Guevara/Eddie Kingston. The latter for his promos.

Full disclaimer, I do not watch WWE and only watch the occasional highlights from AEW. So my choice is kind of out there. I've got two.
Syuri has done phenomenal work in Stardom this year, including the first 5 star women's match in 20 years vs Utami Hayashishita. As a long time fan of hers, it's fantastic to see her finally getting a big push from someone. As the only Joshi I've met in person, she's got a special place in my heart.
Also, surprisingly to me, Starlight Kid has been fantastically good since her heel turn and joining Oedo Tai. I had no idea that SLK Dark was something I needed in my life, but now I do! Considering that she stepped into the leadership role kind of by default when Natsuko Tora went down with an injury and Konami announced she's going on hiatus, she's really grown into the role!

To answer the question I think I have to go with Hangman Adam Page. Losing the 5-on-5 and then returning to win the Casino Ladder match was awesome and I loved the rollercoaster ride Hangman has gone on this year.
Adam Cole probably could have made a push if he came to AEW sooner. I never saw him in the indies and didn't watch much NXT 1.0 other than the Pat McAfee feud (fucking awesome stuff, big fan of the Pat McAfee Show) so my exposure to Cole wasn't massive. I knew he was a great wrestler, just never saw it consistently because I didn't watch his show besides streamables.
To echo Anthony, Jamie Hayter came out of nowhere to become one of my favorite girls. I actually actively disliked her initial AEW run because I didn't like her look or in ring work but the she came back and blew me away with both. I'm really hoping AEW has massive plans for her. She's fantastic and has started to overshadow Britt in my fandom.
I loved what Hit Row was doing in NXT too, but that didn't last long. Bron Breakker is someone who can very well be my answer next year.
But yeah, my answer is Hanger.

The more I sit here and ponder my answer, the more I'm surprised to come back to one constant. As much as he's frustrated me, annoyed me and flat out angered me at times this year, I cannot deny that Cody Rhodes has continually put out decent to really good matches. While his character work at times has been so confusing, his in ring work has never really wavered. From Adnrade to Malakai to his match recently with Guevara, there wasn't much that he did well and hit on. The more I look back at the year that was 2021 for me in pro wrestling, the more I realize I was constantly 'sports entertained' by Cody Rhodes and what he was doing.

I don't watch WWE or NXT. but Ikeman Jiro is good.
DDT stars? Konosuke Takeshita and Chris Brookes ran the company and put on the MOTY in my opinion at who's gonna top.
I think I'm gonna lean more towards Kzy from Dragon Gate as my favorite because his loss at Kobe world was so heart breaking.

The easy answer for me would be Ruby. Or JD Drake. But for someone I didn't expect, MJF. Dude has been must-watch for me this year when he's on the screen, and has been involved in countless good segments. Him and Brian Pillman Jr had no business engrossing me how they did.
