Our regularly scheduled programming on the World Wrestling Network, a deep dive documentary on the life and times of George The Animal Steele fades into commercial break.
However instead of commercials, what follows is a warped and twisted series of shrieks over a visual of a burning bonfire. The camera holds tight on the flame and after a few seconds of reviewing the scene… you can see that there is a man way off in the distance. Actually make that two of them, there’s someone behind him. Wait on the other side is that another two? The more you look, the more eyes and twisted faces seem present.
The shrieking pauses and the shot fades to a similar shot of the bonfire. Now a bit larger, like it had never been lit in the first place. And Malakai Black stands alone.
MALAKAI BLACK: Last week, Cody took his eyes off of where they should have been. And it costed him greatly. He was so focused on Warhorse and his own self-centered ego trip that he forgot what lurks in the dark. With steady aim and a determination in my attack, I made sure he will not ever make that mistake again. A fade to black. And that is the end of Cody’s championship reign before it even began. The fade to black is not the sort of move that can just be shook off, I suspect Cody still isn’t seeing straight after that strike caught him right across the skull with no time to cover up. How can a man who can’t see expect to be able to defend his championship? He better hope to heal quickly because it’d take nothing short of a miracle for him to even make it to Clash at the Canyon to forfeit his title in-person.
Malakai smirks.
MALAKAI BLACK: The tool to expose the tormented souls will soon be within my grasp.
The smirk immediately fades.
MALAKAI BLACK: But before I get my moment at the Grand Canyon, I have a small other issue to contend with. Cody may be out of action but his Nightmare Family still holds a pulse due to… his older brother Dustin. And Dustin has taken it upon himself to challenge me to a fight on the next show. To that I say…. I accept. I accept the match against you Dustin Rhodes but I take no ownership of what happens in our battle. You chose this fight and the results lay in the hands of you and the people you hold near and dear.
Malakai turns and glimpses at the bonfire ready to be lit behind him.
MALAKAI BLACK: Dustin, you suffer the same complex as Cody. There’s this misplaced belief that has somehow become so warped it has become a guiding principle for you. You view yourself as the older brother trying to save his sibling. A sibling you did not grow up with, one whose only tie to you is the blood you share, a last name, and a daddy buried deep in the ground. Dustin, I feel greater empathy for you than I do Cody. Or Brandi. Or any of those bottom feeders leeching off of the notoriety of the “Nightmare Family”. For you, it wasn’t about glory. You are a man who carries much guilt, overburdened by it. Guilt about your own relationship with Dusty. And that guilt has translated into martyrdom. You stand beside your brother not as an equal but as a minion out of some attempt at loyalty to a family that always treated you like the afterthought. After years of rebellion, your soul grew week and your mind and body became polluted. Gone was the spirit of a man set to carve his own path and in his place is a lapdog to a throne that would never be his.
Malakai looks down with distain at the thought of the misguided man.
MALAKAI BLACK: Dustin, when I look at you I ask myself: does he know? Do you know your brother is a snake? Do you know that this mission to save him is protecting someone vile? Do you know what is in store for you when we fight? These are questions I ask myself and they are questions you should be asking as well. But the time for thoughts like that are fleeting because you’ve already stepped up for a battle you should have never volunteered for. And for that you’re going to pay.
Malakai pulls out a large match and lights it.
MALAKAI BLACK: But know this Dustin, you chose this journey. You decided to sacrifice yourself for your brother. Don’t blame me for that anymore than you would blame the bullet for the execution. I am the weapon, not the one responsible for it firing. For that you can thank your little baby brother.
Malakai holds the match to the bonfire and it slowly takes light. As the fire starts slowly growing, the first of many sets of eyes in the distance reveal themselves.
