“C’mon … we named a show after you, get it? That’s funny!”
LANCE STORM: Yeah. It’s hilarious.
The Salt Lake City Marriott.
“I mean, you get it, right? Storm and Storm.”
LANCE STORM: What’s not to get?
“I don’t know, I think it’s pretty interesting.”
LANCE STORM: I think you need to adjust what qualifies as interesting.
“Whatever you say, man. Fine, we didn’t name a show after you. No Storm and Storm.”
LANCE STORM: Storm and Storm. What a conversation.
It’s not the most extravagant hotel. But, it’s not terrible either.
LANCE STORM: What’s in a name, right?
“I don’t get it.”
LANCE STORM: A rose by any other name?
“Yeah man, you kinda lost me.”
LANCE STORM: Nevermind.
So this Salt Lake City Marriott. This not extravagant but not terrible hotel. It’s where “The Thrillseeker” Lance Storm is staying now that WLCW is in Salt Lake City for the debut edition of Storm. Yes, our Thrillseeker has come to Salt Lake for his next thrill, despite not being on the lookout for a thrill. And, this person he’s talking to? He’s not actually in the scene. He’s actually providing the scene. He’s the cameraman.
LANCE STORM: I can’t believe this is interesting to you. Well, maybe I can. The whole Storm and Storm business again.
“Of course it’s interesting. You’re in the title contender battle royale and this is an opportunity to get your thoughts heading into the match.”
LANCE STORM: I thought it was an opportunity for me to catch a cab, personally.
“Two birds, my man.”
LANCE STORM: If this is interesting for you, then let’s do it. Let’s talk title contenders and battle royales.
“Nicei! I guess we should start off by addressing the Brock Lesnar in the room.”
LANCE STORM: A fine place to start if you ask me, which clearly you are.
“Hey, at least he didn’t tear your head off.”
Just outside the Sale Lake City Marriott, outside waiting for a cab, this doesn’t bring a smirk to the of WLCW’s Thrillseeker.
LANCE STORM: No. No he didn’t.
“Yeah, so mission accomplished. You still came up short though, thoughts?”
LANCE STORM: Well, I made it clear going in that it wasn’t going to be easy. I thought if I took Brock Lesnar to the core of what I do best, and that’s wrestle, that I’d have a good shot but at the end of the day he brought his best and it was better. I really don’t know that there is much more to say than that. That’s the thing about our business, more often than not there is a winner and a loser. One match doesn’t make a career, but it certainly sets a tone, especially early on like it was at Vengeance. Brock Lesnar started his WLCW career with a win and I started my WLCW career with a loss. There is no other way to look at it than that, and I’m not going to run from that fact. I’m going to own it. Taking Brock to the core of what we do wasn’t enough, regardless of what I thought heading into the match. But, just like the thing about our business being that more often than not there is a winner and a loser, the thing about our business is that more often than not things don’t go completely as planned and the competitors are forced to adapt. I didn’t win my debut match and I’ve got to adjust. No questioning that. And, my first opportunity to make that adjustment is right here in Salt Lake City, and that opportunity to adjust is also an opportunity to become a title contender.
“Wow.”
LANCE STORM: What’s that?
“Nothing. It’s just, those were a lot of thoughts.”
LANCE STORM: You asked the question.
“I did. You’re not wrong though. You do have an opportunity to, as you say, adjust AND you have an opportunity to become a title contender here in WLCW. Tell me, and the fans, what that means to you.”
Before “The Thrillseeker” can respond, he’s interrupted as a man down the street just a bit announces what he’s got for sale for the folks outside the not extravagant but not terrible Salt Lake City Marriott.
“Hot dogs! Get your hot dogs!”
LANCE STORM: What is it with people and hot dogs?”
“Hey man, they’re fantastic!”
LANCE STORM: If you say so. So, what was it again you were asking? You know, before the hot dog interruption?
“Becoming a title contender. What does that mean to you?”
LANCE STORM: I think the answer you’re looking for is that it would mean I’ve still got it.
Mocking the cliche chant, Storm continues …
LANCE STORM: You’ve-still-got-it … You’ve-still-got-it!
“Excellent! But, no, I’m not looking for anything. Just your thoughts.”
LANCE STORM: I guess it would mean that I have an opportunity to be someone that gets a chance to show that things still mean something in this sport. There are probably a lot of guys in this title contender battle royale that don’t look at it that way. I mean, how many people are looking at this match as an opportunity to get a championship? I am, I know that much. But, it’s more than that. It’s about an opportunity to show that a championship means something. It’s not an accessory. Winning this match makes you a contender. Which really just means an opportunity.
“So this match is an opportunity for an opportunity?”
LANCE STORM: In so many words. But, it’s an opportunity for an opportunity to make something mean something. If I’m fortunate enough to call myself a champion in WLCW, the championship will mean something. It won’t be an accessory, it won’t be something I have just because it can be the result of what we do. It’ll be something I have because I want to have it, because it means something to me, because championships mean something. Those people that stop to eat those hot dogs over there. They’re stopping to eat those hot dogs because they’re hungry, right?
“I guess.”
LANCE STORM: If I win the opportunity to have an opportunity and use that opportunity to become a champion, it won’t be because I’m fulfilling a basic need like hunger. It’ll be because I want that specific thing. It’ll be because I want to be a champion, because I want it to mean something.
“I guess, but some people specifically want hot dogs.”
LANCE STORM: Then good for them for getting hot dogs and making hot dogs mean something. I can understand where they’re coming from in that regard. Nothing means anything anymore in our sport. I don’t know what’s going to happen in this title contender battle royale, just like I didn’t know what was going to happen in my match with Brock Lesnar. But, I do know what I consider this to be and I do know that it means something. I thought I’d bring meaning to the chaos in my debut match, and I think I accomplished that much. I think I made that match mean something. A battle royale? A battle royale by nature is chaos. Yet, I think I’ll make it mean something. Even with title contendership, a battle royale is still a bunch of guys thrown in the ring and it’s tough to make it mean anything. But don’t worry, I’ll take care of that.
A cab pulls into view and Lance takes a few steps from the cameraman, but he’s not ready to end the conversation yet.
LANCE STORM: A bunch of competitors are going to be thrown my way in this battle royale. A bunch of chaos is going to be thrown my way. It’s the perfect opportunity for something to mean nothing. It’s the perfect opportunity for once again our sport to have a match just to have a match, with the window dressing of a title contendership. That’s not going to happen. Because I’m in the match, which means that it’ll mean something. I didn’t know what would happen against Brock Lesnar and I don’t know what will happen in this match. But, I do know that I’ll adapt, that I’ll adjust, and I’ll bring meaning to the chaos once again.
Walking to the cab, Storm offers one final comment before climbing in …
LANCE STORM: Storm and Storm.
A battle royale. A thrill.
LANCE STORM: Yeah. It’s hilarious.
The Salt Lake City Marriott.
“I mean, you get it, right? Storm and Storm.”
LANCE STORM: What’s not to get?
“I don’t know, I think it’s pretty interesting.”
